Teaching Philosophy and Course Design

I am passionate about teaching critical reading and writing skills that help college students meet a variety of short- and long-term needs: career goals in a variety of fields, literacy tools needed for other college classes, and essential daily literacy practices like understanding texts and writing arguments. Literary study develops students' sense of self and engagement with and understanding of the world.

I hold a Master of Arts in Teaching from Bard College and previously taught high school English (ELA certification for 7-12) in addition to eight years as a private tutor. I also completed a Certificate in College Teaching at Claremont Graduate University. I have read deeply on educational theory and am committed to inclusive, evidence-based teaching practices that promote student engagement.

I have ample experience writing syllabi and designing curricula, as well as tailoring syllabi to specific learning objectives and differentiating instruction to meet the varied needs of students in the classroom.

A few of the courses I can teach include:

     American Literature

     British Literature

     Introduction to Composition

     Introduction to College Writing

     Introduction to College English

     English 101

     Introduction to Literature

Literature electives: 20th Century Literature, Modernism, etc.
